Be Seeing You…….
This is the catchy phrase I’ve become addicted to, from ‘The Prisoner’ – a surreal TV series from the 1960’s.
(Somehow it passed me by then, but I was quite young – not any more!) Interestingly enough, I don’t recall it ever having been shown since.
Patrick McGoohan played the main character ‘Number 6’, and now that I’ve got to know him have to sadly accept his death in January 2009.
The series was set in the beautiful village of Portmeirion in North Wales, in which my partner and parents spent a happy few days last June, staying in the Castle, which is now a luxury hotel, but in the film was the hospital where some not very nice experiments were carried out on some of the prisoners from ‘The Village’
On our trip, I was actually interested to see where the Portmeirion pottery came from, and check out the village shops, but it’s a very quaint place, and soon feels like home – so it’s quite odd to now be watching a strange group of individuals living there, and having some not very normal everyday experiences.
The Prisoner is like no other TV Show or Cinema film I have ever seen – does it make any sense?......Well just watch, go with it, and don’t try to make sense of it…and you’ll be OK. It is truely original, and doesn’t fit my normal viewing criteria, but it is gripping for it’s sheer surrealness – and for that, I’m loving it.
Most of all I want to know if he ever escapes…he hasn’t yet given in to the many plots to ‘get him to talk’ – but 2 episodes left to go!!!
I won’t ever tell you either, that is the suspense – so I’m glad my partner and parents are keeping quiet (they all saw the show originally) – I wonder if they can even remember after all this time!
